Product Description and Applications
One-Step Rail Car Cleaner is simply the coal hopper car cleaner on the market. One-Step does not rely on aggressive acids and alkalis for its effectiveness, but rather on a unique blend of non-hazardous proprietary surfactant and performance-enhancing additives. As a result, grease, oil, road film, soot, grime, scale and dirt are dissolved quickly and thoroughly without damaging underlying paint and decals. One-Step works well on tank cars, box cars, and locomotives, as well as on coal cars. When used in conjunction with GraffitiGone and/or Aluminum Brightener, it can make your rail cars look like new again.
Designed for spray application followed by a water rinse, all at moderate pressure, One-Step usually does the job without brushing, scraping, or wiping. It is biodegradable, and not classified as hazardous by the DOT.
Based on the proprietary surfactant technology, One-Step Rail Car Cleaner was specifically formulated for removing the types of dirt commonly found on coal hopper cars. It contains additives which provide greater adhesion to vertical surfaces for increased contact time with dirt and grime, and additional ingredients for rapid penetration of heavy deposits. One-Step is particularly effective at quickly emulsifying and dissolving thick coatings of carbon, soot, oil and grease, and also readily removes road film, scale, soot, and grime.
One-Step exhibits a low level of aggressiveness to human skin and will not dull painted surfaces if rinsed off in a reasonable period of time. Run-off from equipment cleaned with One-Step is usually of low to moderate alkalinity and can be neutralized, if necessary, with a small amount of acid.
One-Step is a moderately alkaline aqueous solution of surfactants, builders, complexing agents, anti-redeposition additives, and corrosion inhibitors. It contains no solvents, glycol ethers or acids, and while mildly alkaline it contains no excess caustic. Perhaps the most impressive feature of One-Step is its ability to quickly emulsify and dissolve thick coatings of oil and grease; and if allowed to remain undisturbed for 5-10 minutes the grease/oil phase will demulsify and float to the top. However, it also readily removes road film, scale, soot, and grime, making One-Step the most versatile and powerful heavy-duty cleaning product available.

Use Instructions
It is not necessary to dilute this product before use. Apply an even coat of One-Step Rail Car Cleaner using a pressure sprayer, working from side to side and from bottom to top, to avoid streaking. Large areas can be coated before rinsing because One-Step's performance is not adversely affected if it dries.
For light to moderately dirty coal hopper cars, a 30-60-second soak or dwell time is usually adequate. For heavily soiled cars, a soak time of several minutes may be required. Areas of very heavy build-ups such as car end panels coated with dried lubricating and curve greases, may require a second application in localized areas of build-up. You can determine the best soak or dwell time for your job by applying One-Step to small areas of the car and rinsing off after various waiting periods. The car should be rinsed with plain water, hot or cold. Use a side-to-side spraying motion, working from the top of the car downward. Adequate rinse water should be applied to completely flush the cleaner and dirt from the car.
Runoff from cars cleaned with One-Step is usually of low to moderate alkalinity and can be neutralized with a small amount of acid. Oil and grease, which are rapidly emulsified during the cleaning operation, will separate from the water and rise to the top, if the runoff is collected and allowed to remain undisturbed for about an hour in a tank or container. The water phase and oil/grease phase can then be handled separately in terms of treatment or disposal.
